Our Focus

At Little Red Hen Pre-Primary School, we believe that every child deserves a warm, safe, and inspiring place to begin their learning journey. Our school is more than just a classroom—it's a nurturing environment where curiosity is encouraged, friendships blossom, and learning happens through joyful discovery.

We offer a balanced, play-based curriculum designed to support each child’s growth across all developmental areas. From babies to Grade R, our classes are small and our approach is personal. We focus on building strong foundations that help children thrive—academically, socially, and emotionally.

Our dedicated team of passionate educators works closely with families to create a strong home-school connection. Together, we help children gain confidence, develop kindness, and foster a lifelong love for learning.

The History of our School- Sowing little seeds

The story of The Little Red Hen, who began with just a grain of wheat, beautifully reflects the beginnings of our school.

Founded in 1987 with just a handful of pupils and a strong vision for the future, Little Red Hen grew from the dedication, hard work, and personal initiative of its founders. At the time, there was only one other pre-primary school serving the Hillcrest and Winston Park area.

Guided by a family of educators spanning three generations, our school has flourished into the warm, nurturing environment it is today.

We are proud to be registered with the Departments of Education, Health, and Social Development.

Our School

Little Red Hen features six air-conditioned classrooms, each thoughtfully equipped with age-appropriate play and learning materials designed to nurture curious minds and developing bodies. In addition to these core classrooms, we have two dedicated spaces that house our Audiblox and Montessori centres and facilities for occupational therapy sessions if needed.

Our classrooms are rich with educational resources, including puzzles, learning activities, themed arts and crafts, and educational games—all carefully chosen to support cognitive, physical, and emotional development in young children. To spark creativity and support social-emotional development, we offer a dedicated role-play area known as the Imagination Station. This space transforms regularly to align with our learning themes and is equipped with dress-up clothes, props, and engaging activities that encourage imaginative play and storytelling.

Our bathrooms are purpose-built for young children, with fixtures designed to suit their size and developmental stage. This thoughtful design supports children in gaining confidence and independence as they learn essential self-care skills.

Our Outdoor Play Areas

The Scratch Patch

Designed especially for our babies and toddlers, the Scratch Patch is a safe, nurturing outdoor space tailored to their developmental needs. This area is fully fenced off from the older children to ensure a secure environment where our youngest learners can explore, play, and grow at their own pace.

These younger children have exclusive access to their own swings, jungle gym, and cycle track, along with specially designed sensory development trays. Sensory play is a vital part of early childhood development, supporting learning through curiosity, exploration, creativity, and problem-solving.

These experiences lay the foundation for cognitive growth and the development of both gross and fine motor skills, all within a safe and stimulating environment that encourages exploration and learning through play.

The Playground

Our top school playground is thoughtfully designed to support gross motor development and sensory learning through active play. It features five large jungle gyms complete with swings, hideaways, bridges, and climbing frames that encourage movement, coordination, and imaginative play.

Children also enjoy a tarred cycle track equipped with a range of tricycles, scooters, and tandems, fostering physical activity and balance. A spacious sandpit invites digging, building, and collaborative play using a variety of tools and toys, making every day an adventure in learning.Sensory development is essential for a child’s learning, helping them make sense of the world around them. To support this, we provide a variety of sensory trays, water troughs, woodworking, and painting activities daily. These are set in a lovely grassed area beneath our indigenous flat-crown trees, offering children a natural, enriching space for exploration and creativity.

Our famous Zulu hut serves as a cultural space where children are introduced to the rich traditions of Zulu culture. Here, they are often treated to ethnic foods, folk tales, or simply enjoy some quiet, relaxing time. This special area provides a unique opportunity for cultural enrichment and peaceful reflection.

Our Founders

LOGO Little Red Hen BRIGHT NEW main.jpg

Sisters Fay and Merle founded our school in 1987, inspired by the story of the Little Red Hen, who began with just a grain of wheat. Like her, they started with only a handful of pupils and a vision for the future—planting the seeds that have grown into the thriving school we know today, more than 30 years later.
